The red and white lights strobed in the darkness as I sat in the ambulance with my friend and two strangers. A drunk driver had totaled my car and the strangers’ before driving off into the night. We were all physically safe, if emotionally shaken. Despite the shock, the sudden loss of my car had not thrown me into a panic because I lived in a neighborhood where I could safely walk, bike, or bus to my grocery store and my job.
I knew I was lucky, but I also knew that others wouldn’t have the same soft landing from such a traumatic experience, and was the catalyst for my interest in transportation planning. Ensuring everyone can be part of their communities no matter the randomness of life or financial expenses is a value that drives me everyday to develop more equitable transportation systems.
While my calling to the transportation profession is serious, in my free time I am anything but. I am an avid bicyclist and member of my local cycling club, enjoy getting out into nature with my family, spotting the various birds across the region, and spending time casually drawing. Hope to catch you around for a nice social outing one day!
