As a team of 5 I researched construction impacts for this health impact assessment.
Our work utilized an equity lens to analyze the Red Line Extension's impact on nearby communities' health and built environment.
A key takeaway was identifying how a transit project can impact local business stability, traffic injuries, resident physical activity, and the probability of these impacts.
The project was completed for the Masters in Urban Planning and Policy program elective course Health Impact Assessment.
Construction can also decrease walkability of the surrounding community (Maricopa County Department of Public Health et al., 2015; Brown & Werner, 2008). This is accomplished through obstruction of existing sidewalks or pathways by construction-related activities, or through increased traffic caused by construction activities decreasing the feelings of security and safety by pedestrians (Brown & Werner, 2008). This can impact community health by increasing social isolation and increased sedentary behavior as community members seek to avoid the streetscape changed by construction activities. Ensuring continual and safe access for all members of the community will ensure this impact is properly mitigated
